Q: Should I choose the .ogg or .wav version of the sound files?
A: Choose the .ogg version if you have no particular reason to select the .wav format. The .ogg format already provides very high sound quality while using a fraction of the disk space required for .wav files. Nevertheless, keep in mind that these two formats do not necessarily represent the same sound - keep reading to learn more.
That being said, a valid reason to choose .wav over .ogg is if you're planning to edit or mix the audio files, such as merging DynamicMusic files. In such cases, we recommend the .wav format.
Side note: in the previous kasumata.ee version, .ogg files used to have massive unnecessary reverb. This effect has since been removed.
Q: How are .ogg files encoded?
A: All .ogg files are encoded with the Opus codec using opusenc with average bitrate of 128 kb/s. Although 128 kb/s might sound low, the Opus codec is massively better than, say, MP3, which would require 192+ kb/s for the same quality.
Q: How are .wav files encoded?
A: For compatibility reasons, .wav files are resampled to 48000 Hz, 16-bit PCM, regardless of their in-game format.
Q: How do the .ogg and .wav versions differ? Is there more to it than just sound quality?
A: It depends on the exact file, but in general these two versions will differ slightly. The .ogg version more closely represents the audio you hear in game, whereas the .wav version represents the audio that has been recorded in the studio. These two are not necessarily equivalent because Warframe applies real-time sound effects, which will be present in the .ogg file but absent from the .wav file.
The most significant difference can be noticed in dialog audio files - the .ogg versions is exactly the audio heard in game, whereas the .wav versions are the almost raw lines produced by voice actors.
Q: How were the files extracted/ripped from the game?
A: All sound files were automatically played in-game and recorded at different audio processing stages. This allows us to extract audio files both with and without in-game sound effects.
